Introduction to Oil Painting

8 SATURDAYS, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
MARCH 8 - APRIL 26, 2025
INSTRUCTED BY
JASON ALDEN

This session is fully booked! Please contact for waiting list or to receive notice of future classes.

In this 8 week class, artists will be introduced to foundational principles and practices of oil painting. On the technical side, we will learn about applied color theory, mixing color from life, stretching canvas, and various direct and indirect painting techniques.

On the intuitive side, we will explore how oil paint can hold and transmit feeling, how every painting has an abstract communication and how we can increase our sensitivity to compositional relationships within our paintings.

Using traditional and unorthodox practices, artists will find their way to making paintings that are meaningful and encouraging to themselves and others.

Materials

We will provide oil paint, palettes and most painting surfaces for this class. A list of brushes and recommendation for palette knife will be sent to each student upon registration. Mid-way through the course, we will stretch our own canvasses and students can choose and pay for the size of stretcher bars that they wish to work on.
