Figures in Rhythm:
Gesture Drawing with Musicians

Drawing

drawing of woman playing violin

A weekend long workshop immersion
A collaboration between
River Gallery School & The Drawing Studio
Saturday & Sunday, February 1 & 2

This drawing workshop will focus on rendering the human figure in relation to music and music making, exploring both accurate and expressive representation of the figure. We will take a deep dive into gesture drawing, and participants will also practice sighting - learning how to quickly see relationships, angles and proportions of parts of the figure in relation to each other. There will be an emphasis on mark making (especially in relation to music) and on using our drawing materials to their best advantage.

As part of the drawing process, opportunities will be offered to practice mindfulness meditation as an integral part of the creative process and to assist us getting out of our own way through becoming aware of and working with our inner judgemental voices.

The workshop will culminate in drawing sessions with a live musician as we explore visual representations of both the player and the music.

Bio Scott Kessel

Scott Kessel has been a visual artist and musician his entire life. (In his portraits of musicians, one of Scott’s goals is to create images that allow the physical representations of the musician to appear through the visualization of their music.)

He is currently a Visiting Professor of Art, teaching drawing, as well as private drum lessons, and mindfulness meditation at Wesleyan University, in Middletown, CT. He has been the Artist in Residence at Kidcity Children’s Museum, also in Middletown, for the last 25 years.

When not teaching or designing and building new exhibits, he is the drummer for Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem, one of New England’s most beloved string bands.

You can find some of his work on instagram @kesselarts and music at www.raniarbo.com
